Pequenos Leitores - Little Readers

Eu e William estamos lendo a “ Historia da Noite” da Marilda dos Santos Bersot.  O rei da claridadade, O Sol,  estava sem nada para fazer, resolveu dar uma olhadinha  nos seus brinquedos dos tempos de crianca, quando so era um pontinho de luz, e achou um manto negro….  Este livro e muito especial  para o William, ja que o meu pai ( vovo do William) o lia para ele quando estavamos no Brasil. Eu acho uma forma muito criativa de se falar sobre noite e dia.

Colecao do William - William's Private collection

William and I are reading Historia da Noite, or The Story of the Night by Marilda dos Santos Bersot.  The King of Lightness, the sun, had nothing to do, and decided to take a look at his childhood toys, when he was just a speck of light.  Among those toys, he found a black cape...  This book is very special to William, since it was the book my father (William's grandfather) read most frequently to him when we were in Brazil.  I think this is a very creative way to talk about night and day.

O Rabo de Cavalo da Stephanie - Stephanie's Ponytail

"Feio, horroroso, cabelo assombroso!"

Na quarta-feira reapresentamos uma adaptação do livro Stephanie's Ponytail, do escritor Canadense Robert Munsch. Essa foi a nossa primeira peça teatral apresentada por um grupo de seis mães do Clube do Livro em janeiro deste ano. Sinto muito orgulho em informar-les que desta vez o nosso elenco foi composto por tres atores juvenis! Parabéns a Conner, Gabi e Elena. Contamos tambem com uma canjinha do William e da Juliana!

No livro, uma jovem estudante quer se destacar como uma pessoa independente, e demonstra sua individualidade atraves do seu cabelo. Os estudantes na sua escola riem muito dos estilos "complicados" que Stephanie inventa, mas no final, acabam aderindo a nova moda... Só que quem acaba rindo por último e a Stephanie...

A mensagem é válida para toda criança, e acompanha o nosso tema escolar. Tambem achamos que é importante passar e repassar a idea aos nossos filhos bilíngues que alem de ser permitido, é muito bom ser diferente. As mamães em janeiro - the mommies in January

On Wednesday we presented an adaptation of Canadian author Robert Munsch's book, Stephanie's Ponytail for the second time in the history of Clube do Livro. This was the first play we performed in January of this year, a cast of six mothers. We are proud to say that this time our troupe included three young actors! Congratulations to Conner, Gabi and Elena! Our play also featured cameo performances by Juliana and William!

In the book, a young student wants to demonstrate her independent spirit, and does so through increasingly unique hairstyles. The students laugh at her hair initially, but wind up copying her. Stephanie, however, has the last laugh.

The message is timely for all children, and definitely in keeping with our month's theme. We feel, however, that it is particularly of interest to our bilingual school age children to hear the message again and again that it is okay, and even desirable to be different. We will present a bilingual version of this play at the Main Library on Saturday, September 25 at 1:00. Click here for more details.

Eu e Gabi estamos lendo Fábulas do grande Monteiro Lobato, que retiramos do Main Library downtown. O livro contem contos classicos, como A Cigarra e a Formiga e A Raposa e as Uvas, mas a maioria das fábulas não conheciamos. Os comentarios da Emilia, Narizinho e os outros personagens do Sitio do Picapau Amarelo sao muito engraçados!

Gabi and I checked out Fábulas by the classic Brazilian author, Monteiro Lobato at the Main Library downtown. There are old favorites like the Ant and the Grasshopper, and The Fox and the Grapes, but most of the fables were unknown to us. We thought the comments by Emilia, Narizinho, and the other characters from O Sitio do Picapau Amarelo were really funny.

Todo mes escolhemos um tema diferente para Storytime em Portugues e Clube do Livro.  Como muitas de voces estão voltando à escola, indo pela primeira vez ou vendo irmãos ou irmas maiores saindo cedinho de manhã, resolvemos escolher o tema Escola para este mes.

O nosso Storytime foi muito divertido hoje, com muitos amiguinhos Brasileiros e Americanos.  Lemos uma tradução do livro The Kissing Hand, por Audrey Penn sobre um pequeno coati que nao tem certeza que quer ir a escola.  Cantamos A Roda do Ônibus, que muitos ja conheciam e Um, Dois, Feijao com Arroz.  Descobrimos que existem MUITAS versoes desta parlenda popular!  No Livro de Numeros do Marcelo, por Ruth Rocha, descobrimos mais uma!

Brincamos de Escravos de Jó e lemos o ABC do Mundinho, por Ingrid Bellinghausen.  No proximo mes o nosso tema sera Halloween!   Te vejo na biblioteca!

Each month we choose a different theme for Portuguese Storytime and Portuguese Book Club.  Since many of you are going back to school, are going for the first time, or have older brothers and sisters who are leaving home early in the morning, we thought it would be appropriate to make our theme School this month.

Our Storytime was very fun today, with lots of Brazilian and American friends.  We read a translation of Audrey Penn's The Kissing Hand, about a little raccoon who is not so sure he wants to go to school.  We sang The Wheels on the Bus in Portuguese, and we also tried out Um Dois, Feijao com Arroz (One, Two, Beans and Rice) a popular counting rhyme in Brasil, similar to One Two, Buckle my Shoe.  We learned that there are MANY versions of this rhyme, and in O Livro de Numeros do Marcelo, by Ruth Rocha, we discovered yet another!

A Mao Que Beija

We read O ABC do Mundinho, by Ingrid Bellinghausen and played a Brazilian game called Job's Slaves.  You can read more about it here.  Next month our theme will be Halloween.  See you at the library!

Bilingual Theater

Teatro Bilíngüe / Bilingual Theater

O Clube do Livro apresentará peças de teatro em duas linguas a uma hora da tarde, um sabado ao mes no Main Library downtown. Historias Brasileiras e Americanas serão apresentadas em portugues e inglês, com um projeto de arte logo a seguir. Crianças de todas as idades são bem vindas.

The Clube do Livro (Portuguese Book Club) will be presenting bilingual plays at 1:00 pm, one Saturday a month at the Main Library downtown. Brazilian and American stories will be presented in Portuguese and English, followed by a related art project. Children of all ages are encouraged to join in the fun!
